Oudtshoorn

On our way back to Cape Town we stopped in at Outshorn to see the caves and the Ostrich farms!

The Cango Caves are located in Precambrian limestone. The principal cave is huge and attracts many visitors from around the world. Although the extensive system of tunnels and chambers go on for over four kilometers, only about a quarter of this is open to visitors. I did the "Standard Tour" which takes an hour. I didnt want to do the adventure tour because it consists of crawling through narrow passages and climbing up steep rock formations. The smallest passage that tourists can go through on the Adventure Tour is just under 30 cm high at the exit.I was afraid my claustrophobia would get the better of me in such tight quarters! The caves are considered to be part of the famous Garden Route of South Africa and were really a sight to see.

The ostrich farm was really fun! We fed the giant birds and learned a lot about them. Apparently Ostriches are the fastest two legged animal on the planet. They can reach speeds of 70km per hour and can kick a person to death! When they kick forwards, they can pack a punch of about 120km per hour! Some members of the group rode the ostriches...Not me! I fed them but that was as close as I wanted to get!
