Nigeria-Afi Drill Ranch

After leaving Calabar we headed to the Afie drill ranch. Afi is in the Boki tribal area, and is a 4 hour drive north from Calabar. The site is nestled at the foot of Afi Mountain, and was designed for a local conservation initiative. At the ranch we saw Drill monkeys, large rainforest animals that only live in Nigeria and parts of neighboring Countries. These animals are among Africa's most endangered species and the staff at the drill ranch work at breeding them and releasing them back into the wild. The biggest threat to their survival is hunting! People in the region like to use them for "bushmeat" which is commonly sold by street vendors. We all like "street meat" but you can never really be certain what it is! The Afi drill ranch isn't a common tourist destination but our experience here was 5 star! We also went to the nearby canopy walk and swam at the waterfalls!
